Exactly What Is A PVB? Should It Take Place When Having A Sprinkler Repair. We Believe That It Is Important.

Is a PVB (pressure vacuum breaker) often known as backflow preventer necessary? Irrigation repair Phoenix can help you with this task.

Your landscape possesses all kinds of horrible things in it that will make you sick or more serious if you ingest them. As a result irrigation water is regarded as a contaminant (creates a health hazard) rather than just a pollutant (is objectionable in color or odor). What's in your current sprinkler systems water? How about toxic chemicals (fertilizers, pesticides, etc.) and animal waste? (Not that I would like to gross you out, however each day millions of dogs elevate their legs in a fond salute to their beloved sprinkler head!) These things can and WILL come back up your irrigation pipes and also into your drinking water when you don't stop them. If you have a well they may go down your well and into everyone else's drinking water. Should you be on a community water system they can go back up into the pipes and poison your next door neighbor. The valves that turn on and off your irrigation system are not adequate to stop backflow. The reason for the backflow preventer is to protect you when the valve breaks or leaks, which virtually all valves will do eventually. Saving a small amount of money by omitting the backflow preventer will not likely seem so intelligent after you fork out a small fortune on hospital expenses (or funeral charges) for a poisoned family member or pet!

Now hold on a minute, some people say, doesn't the water pressure in the system keep the irrigation water from running backwards? Yes, usually it does. However there are times when the water pressure decreases in the supply system, and this is when the backflow takes place. No, it is not an ordinary occurrence. However it does happen more often than you think, for instance when they have to shut off the water to restore a main line or a valve. This makes construction projects easily the most frequent cause of backflow troubles. Fire fighting is yet another common reason for backflow. Fire trucks use enormous pumps to suck the water out of the fire hydrants. This often causes the water pressure in the water system to go down, and backflow can occur in the surrounding neighborhoods. You are able to do a quick experiment your own self and create backflow. Just turn off the water valve leading to your home. After that have someone turn on a faucet. Now turn on a different faucet which is higher than the first. You will hear air being sucked into the higher faucet. You just created backflow in the house piping. Reasonably easy, wasn't it?

Another common argument against the need for backflow preventers is that if all the valves are shut the water can't proceed backwards through them. Therefore the valves will prevent backflow. The obvious problem with this is that if the backflow occurs at a time when the valve is open, the valve will not likely stop backflow! But even when the valve is closed off it may not prevent backflow. A standard manually operated valve will stop backflow whenever it is closed- when the valve if fully shut, has good seals, and does not leak. However most of the automatic valves, such as the electric solenoid valves used for irrigation systems, is not going to stop backflow even when fully closed. Mainly because these valves are directional in design, should you look on the valve you see that it has an arrow on it featuring the flow direction. If the flow is reversed, the valve cannot completely close and will leak (that's why the valve has the arrow on it to advise you not to install it backwards.) Thus when backflow occurs and the flow direction reverses, an automatic valve will never stop the backward flow.

So when choosing a company to complete sprinkler repair or sprinkler installation be sure you have them install a PVB for you!
